I guess I can’t start a review of a film by Jess Franco without addressing some recent events. In case you didn’t know Jess Franco died earlier this month. At 82 you could say he lived a long eventful life, which he did, but one can’t wonder if he had some movies left in him.
At Blogotronic Cinema you can expect many reviews of Franco’s work. As he is a favorite of mine in Exploitation Cinema.
So without further comment, here is my review of ‘Sadomania’. The first Jess Franco film I ever watched.
Directed by – Jess Franco
Staring – Ajita Wilson
Sadomania is a odd film, even for a 80s Jess Franco women in prison flick. The plot starts out simple enough, with a newly wed women being forced into a prison. Then the plot zooms (literally! This is a Franco film after all!) into various directions involving bestiality, Prostitution, Lesbians, and more.
This is the kind of movie that falls apart the further you get into it. Later on for example when some of the women are put into prostitution. I don’t know why but to me this part of the movie just fell flat. Although the Jess Franco cameo was… Interesting to say the least. In some ways I wouldn’t put it past the crew that they half made up the film as they went along. Which isn’t surprising in the least.
Would I recommend ‘Sadomania’? Yes and no. If you’re famillar with women in prison films and also more of Franco’s filmography I would tell you to go on ahead. However someone new to films like Franco’s would likely not find it enjoyable.
Pros and Cons
Women are topless nearly the whole movie
A 103 minute running time is a tad too long
Too many subplots for a WIP film
Overall ‘Sadomania’ gets a decent score from me
